What is affiliate marketing and how does it work?
Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing where you earn a commission for every product or service that you sell. This type of marketing is usually done through a third-party website, such as Amazon, where you can promote products from a variety of different brands.
When someone clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase, you will earn a commission based on the percentage that the advertiser has agreed to pay.
For example, if an advertiser agrees to pay 10% commission on all sales, and you sell a product for $100, you will earn $10 in commission.
You can check out a list of different affiliate marketing programs here.
How to set up an account on TikTok
To create a business account on TikTok, you will need to provide some basic information about you (and technically your company).
Head on over to either the desktop version (TikTok.com) or download the app and signup with your details there.
Either way, you will need to provide your name, website, and contact information. You will also need to provide a valid phone number to verify your account.
Once your account is created, you are ready to start creating content. Keep in mind that you will need to comply with TikTok's advertising guidelines, which prohibit the promotion of certain types of products and services.
Using TikTok to get into affiliate marketing
With an account setup and running, it's time to start understanding how you can use it with affiliate marketing to earn money. There are of course a number of steps you are going to need to take to be able to start earning from your content, but don't worry, they are simple to follow.
Choose an affiliate program to join
There are a variety of different affiliate programs that you can join, but popular choices include Amazon and eBay.
I would always go for a niche, or an area that you have experience with, else you can find that you are bored of creating content, and as such give up on your efforts.
Create A capture page Or landing page
To start making money on TikTok, all you need to do is connect your TikTok account with a bridge page.
Having a bridge page allows you to capture emails, before sending them off to a product, or program of your choice. It can consist of an email capture page, and then a pre-sale page that talks about the program.
The reason you are going to want to do this is because most social media sites how straight-up affiliate links. Plus it allows you to build a relationship with those who are willing to sign up to your email list.
For the time being, you won't be able to promote this page, but it's worth having it when you get started, else you may end up forgetting, or not having anything ready for when you can promote it.
Start Creating Content
Seems a silly thing to post, but a lot of people create an account, find programs, build pages and then forget the most important part.
This step will require a lot of trial and error, finding the right #hashtags or videos that resonate with your audience. Check this out for some great ideas on how to create content, but also how to grow your account.
Do not get discouraged if it takes time for content to be seen, or to start reaching a larger audience. This does take time, even with the power of the crazy algorithm.
Just keep posting, the most important part is being consistent. A lot of people will post;
- 1 x Monday
- 3 x Wednesday
- 1 x Sunday
And then they will wait 3 weeks until they post again. In reality, you want to be at least going for;
- 1 x per day
- 3 x per week
Whatever you choose, just ensure that you keep at it. Take a few hours per week, or day if you can spare it to think about ideas, then creating them. You can then upload throughout the week, whenever your designated day is.
To get the most out of your post, try including a fun hashtag or emoji in your caption so that people will be more likely to click on it.
Hitting 1,000 Followers - The Magic Number
Never try and focus on this number, though it's difficult to write that, especially when I know people will. You really just want to focus on throwing out epic content for people to love, but 1,000 followers is the first milestone.
TikTok allows you to add a link in your bio, this link becomes the passive income generating link you have been waiting for. Once you hit 1,000 followers you will see a bio link option.
Here you want to add a smart looking domain, I suggest grabbing one from NameCheap. You can easily add your landing page from earlier to this domain, this will look cleaner than putting an awful looking ClickFunnels subdomain or a system subdomain.
Tracking your link clicks
This will be difficult when you are first getting started, especially if you are trying to save money. All the options will cost money in some aspect, but it doesn't have to be bank breaking.
One of the best options would be to use a platform such as ClickMagick. They allow you to create as many links as you like to track conversions and actions across multiple platforms. Super useful if you are also using Shorts or Reels to bring in additional views. ClickMagick does generate you an URL though, which can sometimes get flagged.
Another option is to pay for some cheap hosting, look at BlueHost, they are cheap and reliable. They also allow you to set up WordPress on your site (this will become important).
Once you have WordPress set up on your hosting, you will want to add a plugin called PrettyLinks. It allows you to create pretty looking tracking links, again for each platform you focus on.
You may have to move or sort out the funnel pages you created earlier, but BlueHost support are pretty good at troubelshooting.
The benefits of using TikTok for affiliate marketing
TikTok is one of the most popular apps in the world, with millions of daily users, constantly scrolling and watching content.
TikTok also has a fairly new, and often crazy algorithm. Especially when it comes to the discovery pages.
As such, the ability to go 'viral' on TikTok is fairly easy, with videos being able to get thousands if not hundreds of thousands of views within a few short hours.
How To Use TikTok For Affiliate Marketing - Conclusion
Using TikTok for affiliate marketing is really about focusing on getting content out, and in front of people who will enjoy your content. Currently you can have the most random video picked up and shown to hundreds of thousands of people.
As long as you understand, and work on the basics, TikTok can be a brilliant place to start building a following, no matter the niche, or the products you want to promote.
